German police seal off the old Jewish quarter of Amsterdam and empty its streets in a single day.
After several months of nightly raids, the occupier decides to empty in one sweep the old Jewish quarter of Amsterdam, around the Jonas Daniël Meijerplein and the Waterlooplein. The streets are sealed off at dawn, the houses searched floor by floor, and the inhabitants gathered in the square before being taken to the camp of Westerbork. The quarter that had housed the largest community in the Netherlands since the seventeenth century empties within a few days; its synagogues remain standing, its inhabitants do not return.
