The Shoah (1939–1945)

Roundup of Amsterdam and February strike

22-25 févr. 1941·Amsterdam

Toll
425 déportés

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

First roundup in the Netherlands: 425 young men are sent to Mauthausen, almost none of whom will return. The general strike triggered in solidarity is suppressed.

After weeks of clashes between the gangs of the Dutch national-socialist movement and the self-defense groups of the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam, the German police sealed off the old quarter from 22 to 25 February 1941 and rounded up the young men found there. Gathered at the Jonas Daniël Meijer square, they were sent to Buchenwald and then to Mauthausen, where almost none would survive.

Three days later, at the call of the clandestine communist party, the trams, the docks, and the factories of Amsterdam stopped work: it was the only general strike launched in occupied Europe against the persecution of the Jews. It was broken by force within two days, its leaders shot, the city fined; it is commemorated each year at the foot of the Docker.
