The Shoah (1939–1945)
Protest of Leiden University
26 nov. 1940·Leyde
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
Dean Cleveringa protests publicly against the dismissal of Jewish professors; the university is closed.
At the University of Leiden, the dean of the law faculty delivers a speech before students in tribute to his dismissed Jewish colleague, publicly denouncing the measure as contrary to law and to the Dutch conscience. The students go on strike; the university is closed by the occupier and the speaker is arrested and interned. This gesture remains one of the rare public acts of university protest against the first exclusions in occupied Europe.
