The Shoah (1939–1945)
Deportation of the Jews of Enschede
1942·Enschede
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The Jews of Enschede are arrested; part of the community goes into hiding with the help of the population.
The community of Enschede, the largest in the eastern Netherlands, is summoned for deportation. Warned by a city official and advised by their own leaders, many of its members choose to go underground rather than answer the call; the farmers and industrialists of the region hid a significant portion of them until liberation. Enschede remains, for this reason, the Dutch community with the highest proportion of survivors.
