Arrest and deportation of Jews from Zrenjanin

Zrenjanin, the chief town of Banat, found itself after the dismemberment of Yugoslavia in a region administered directly by the German occupier, with the assistance of the local German-speaking minority. The Jewish community of the city was targeted from the very first weeks: the synagogue was desecrated, property was seized, and prominent members were arrested. Then, during the summer that followed the invasion, the administration decided to empty Banat entirely of its Jews. The Jewish inhabitants of Zrenjanin were gathered and transferred to the capital, where they were imprisoned in the internment sites opened on the bank of the Save and in the city's barracks. It was there, in the months that followed, that the community disappeared.
