Annihilation of the Jewish community of Sremska Mitrovica

Sremska Mitrovica, a town in Syrmia on the Save, was annexed to the Ustasha state during the partition of the country. Its Jewish community, long-established and prosperous, was subjected to the racial decrees of the new regime from the very first weeks: loss of citizenship, confiscation of property, wearing of the distinctive sign, prohibition from practicing any profession. Arrests followed, carried out by the regime's militia. The men were sent first to the camps opened in Slavonia, their families shortly after. The town also housed a large prison where detainees from across the region were imprisoned and executed. Of the Jewish community of Sremska Mitrovica, nothing remained.
