Annihilation of the Jewish community of Zemun

Zemun, on the left bank of the Sava river facing the Serbian capital, was attached during the dismemberment of the country to the Ustasha State, whose racial decrees were applied immediately. The Jewish community of the city, ancient and well organized, lost its property within a few weeks, then its freedoms. Arrests began in the autumn and continued through the winter. The fairground established on the riverbank, a few hundred meters from the Jewish homes of Zemun, became the internment site where women, children, and elderly people from across the region were gathered. The families of Zemun were brought there and disappeared during the following winter and spring.
