A dahir orders Jewish families settled outside the mellah to return to the Jewish quarter. In Casablanca, where the community had established itself extensively in the new neighborhoods of the European city, the measure displaces thousands of people into a space that was never designed to receive them. Housing is shared, rents rise, sanitary conditions deteriorate. Broken leases give rise to no compensation, and the businesses left behind in the streets from which people depart are rarely recovered. The measure will be relaxed before being lifted, but not all returns took place.
