The Jews of Morocco were persecuted under the Saadians, and the community of Tétouan was affected.
Tétouan was one of the northern cities refounded by exiles from Spain, who formed there a community distinct from that of the native Jews, with its own language — the haketia, the Castilian of the expelled — and its own customs. Their condition depended entirely on the sultan and the provincial governors: extraordinary taxes and ransoms returned with every succession crisis.
