Moulay Yazid succeeded his father and opened his reign with a policy of reprisals against the Jewish communities of Morocco, accused of having supported the previous sovereign. Tétouan was taken; the mellah was pillaged and Jews were killed.

The reign would be short but would remain in Moroccan Memory as one of the harshest. The mellahs — those separated Jewish quarters, established in Fès and then elsewhere — were both a protection and a designation: they made it possible to find, to seal off, and to plunder in one stroke what the sovereign wished to reach.
