the mellah looted

The mellah of Meknès was pillaged during the same years, in the wake of the exactions ordered by Moulay Yazid.

Meknès had been the capital in the preceding century, and its community ranked among the most learned in the kingdom, with its own rabbinical tradition. The pillaging impoverished it without destroying it: the notable families reconstituted themselves, but the episode marks the beginning of a decline from which the city would never fully recover.
