the mellah looted, the notables tortured

In Marrakech, the pillaging of the mellah was accompanied by the torture of the notables — the community leaders were handed over to the executioner, which beheaded the communal organization at the same moment it was stripped of its possessions.

Striking down the notables was not an excess of the crowd: it was a choice of power. They were the ones who answered for the community's taxes, who negotiated with the sovereign, who held what one wished to take from him. To put them to death served as both confiscation and warning.
