In Fès, the mellah was pillaged, the community struck with a ransom and driven out for a time from its quarter, which the sovereign assigned to other uses.
Fès had seen the very institution of the mellah come into being, three centuries earlier. That its community could be expelled from it shows what the guarantee attached to the quarter was worth: it was not a right but a tolerance, revocable by the one who had granted it. The following reign would restore the quarter, but the episode would remain in the chronicle as one of the great trials of Moroccan Judaism.
