the mellah plundered

Mogador, a port opened a few decades earlier for trade with Europe, saw its mellah pillaged during the same unrest.

The community there was distinctive: it included the sultan's merchants, privileged traders operating with European houses. This status did not protect the quarter. It would, however, explain the swiftness of its recovery, the port having need of these intermediaries — and Mogador would once again become, within half a century, one of the most prosperous communities in Morocco.
