The mellah of Rabat is pillaged in its turn, the following year, in the continuity of the same reign.
The series touches nearly all the major cities of the kingdom within two years. What makes it possible is not only the will of the sovereign but the very organization of Moroccan society: Jews there are *dhimmis*, protected by a pact that places them under the guardianship of the prince — and a pact of protection is only worth as much as the protector.
