Persecution and deportation of Jews from Senta

The community of Senta, on the Tisa, was one of the oldest in the Bačka and one of the most visible, with its institutions and its school. The Hungarian annexation placed it under the racial laws of Budapest: property registers, professional prohibitions, then the conscription of men into labor companies. The rest followed the fate of the entire province. In the spring that preceded the summer of the deportations, the families of Senta were gathered, held for several days in conditions of severe overcrowding, then led toward the stations from which the trains departed. Almost no one returned to the city; the few survivors found a dissolved community and possessions that had passed into other hands.
