A few days after the proclamation of the Independent State of Croatia, decrees define the Jews, seize their property and impose a badge on them; arrests begin immediately in the capital.

The Independent State of Croatia, proclaimed in Zagreb under the aegis of the Axis powers, promulgates in the following weeks a series of racial laws modeled on those of Nuremberg. Jews are defined, registered, excluded from professions and required to wear a badge. Their property is confiscated and their homes reassigned. The first arrests follow immediately in Zagreb, and the camps of the Ustasha regime open in the months that follow.
