The Jews of Karlovac lose their property from the first Ustaše decrees, are required to wear the distinctive sign, then arrested and handed over to the camps of the New State.
Karlovac, a garrison and trading town on the Kupa, had a Jewish community established since the eighteenth century, with its synagogue and charitable institutions. The racial decrees of the Ustasha regime, promulgated in the weeks following the proclamation of the new State, struck it in full: loss of civil rights, seizure of businesses for the benefit of appointed commissioners, compulsory wearing of the distinctive badge, prohibition of residence in certain neighborhoods. The roundups began during the summer and continued in waves. The Jewish inhabitants of Karlovac were taken to the camps of the new State, where most were murdered. The city thus lost almost its entire Jewish population.
