The Jewish families of Vukovar, on the Danube, are plundered then rounded up by Ustaše authorities and directed to the camps of the new regime.
Vukovar, on the Danube at Croatia's eastern border, was home to a Jewish community engaged in river trade and industry. Annexed to the Ustasha state when the country was partitioned, the city implemented the racial decrees of the new regime: Jewish businesses were handed over to commissioners, families were marked and stripped of their rights, and children were excluded from schools. Raids were carried out during the summer and autumn by the regime's militia, and the Jewish inhabitants of Vukovar were transported to the camps opened in Slavonia. The community, one of the oldest in western Syrmia, was annihilated.
