The Sephardic families of Travnik, established there for generations, are rounded up by the Ustaša authorities and led to the camps of the new regime.
Travnik, former residence of the Ottoman governors of Bosnia, was home to a Sephardic community established there for generations, with its synagogue and ancient cemetery. The racial decrees of the Ustasha regime stripped it bare within the first weeks of the proclamation of the new State: confiscation of property, exclusion from trades, wearing of the distinctive badge. Arrests were carried out by the militia during the summer and autumn, and the families were taken to the camps opened in Slavonia. Most of them perished there. A few escaped the common fate by joining the partisan maquis in the nearby mountains.
