The community of Bjelovar, one of the oldest in northern Croatia, is despoiled and then rounded up by the Ustaše authorities and led to internment sites.
Bjelovar, in northern Croatia, was home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the region, born of merchant families who came from the Habsburg lands. The Ustasha regime stripped it bare from its very first decrees: businesses handed over to commissioners, accounts frozen, children expelled from schools, adults marked with a sewn badge. Arrests followed during the summer and autumn, carried out by the regime's local militia. The families of Bjelovar were led to the camps of Slavonia, where nearly all of them perished. The city's synagogue was destroyed; the community never reconstituted itself.
