A former penitentiary converted into a place of internment, Berrouaghia housed foreign Jews arrested after the defeat as well as militants handed over to the Vichy authorities. The regime was prison-like: cells, roll calls, punishments. The internees at Berrouaghia had not been tried and did not know the length of their sentence. The camp brought together populations who had nothing in common except having been designated, and postwar testimonies describe a place where one waited without knowing for what.
