the community is embarked for Livorno

Oran and Mers el-Kébir had been, since the early sixteenth century, Spanish presidios on the Algerian coast. By a unique exception within the Catholic monarchy, a Jewish community had been maintained there, useful as an intermediary with the hinterland and as a supplier to the garrison; two families, the Cansino and the Sasportas, served as interpreters to the governors.

The exception came to an end by decision of the Madrid court: the families were embarked and disembarked at Livorno, where the Grand Duke of Tuscany received exiles from the peninsula. A Jewish community reformed in Oran after the city was retaken by the Ottomans, and later under French administration.
