Anti-Jewish riots of the Dreyfus affair
1898·Oran
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
Jewish quarter attacked, shops looted
The Jewish quarter of Oran is attacked and shops ransacked during the same wave of violence.
Oran had one of the oldest communities in the country, and its European population was one of the most mixed in Algeria. It is precisely in these cities of recent settlement, where different origins coexist without merging, that anti-Jewish agitation finds its audience: it offers settlers who came from Spain, Italy, and Malta a way of being French more quickly than through naturalization.
