Jewish shops and homes plundered
In Constantine, Jewish shops and homes were pillaged in the wake of the Alger riots.
The Constantine community is one of the oldest in North Africa, established in the city long before the French conquest. The violence of that year foreshadowed the far deadlier events the city would experience a generation later, when the conflict would shift between Jews and Muslims and France would cease to be the sole term of the equation.
