Jews of Algeria lose French citizenship obtained in 1870 and become indigenous again; numerus clausus in schools. It is restored only in October 1943.

On October 7, 1940, Vichy abrogates the Crémieux decree, which in 1870 had granted French citizenship to the Jews of Algeria. With a stroke of the pen they become once again natives, losing access to public office and the liberal professions, and a numerus clausus drives them from schools and lycées, where dismissed teachers would open clandestine classes.

The abrogation strikes a population that has been French for three generations, and it is the only instance in which France withdraws nationality en masse from citizens born as citizens. Maintained after the Allied landing by local authorities, it would not be repealed until October 1943 under pressure from the Comité français de la Libération nationale.
