The Shoah (1939–1945)

Maintenance of the status of Jews in Algeria after the landing

1943·Algérie

Toll
bilan non établi

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The landing in November left laws of exclusion in effect for months; French citizenship would not be restored until the following autumn, after repeated interventions.

The Allied landing at the end of the previous year does not restore to the Jews of Algeria what had been taken from them. The laws of exclusion remain in force for months, under an authority that now calls itself allied. The scholastic numerus clausus is maintained, civil servants are not reinstated, and the abrogation of the décret Crémieux is not reversed. Repeated interventions, in Algeria and in London, will be required before citizenship is restored in the autumn. Jewish fighters who had taken part in the coup de main of the landing thus found themselves denied, after the victory, the nationality they had served.
