The Jews of Algeria, present since Antiquity and reinforced by the expellees from Spain, had received French nationality through the Crémieux decree, then lost it under Vichy before recovering it. This history had placed them on the French side in the conflict that was now ending.

At independence, nearly the entire community left the country within a few months, alongside the repatriates from Algeria, heading principally to France and, for a minority, to Israel. The great synagogue of Oran, one of the largest in North Africa, was converted into a mosque.

This departure brought to an end one of the oldest Jewish presences in the Maghreb and transformed French Judaism, which became predominantly Sephardic within the space of a decade.
