Torah scrolls torn, inscriptions on the walls, Jewish cemetery desecrated
On December 12, 1960, during the demonstrations accompanying General de Gaulle's visit to Alger, the great synagogue on rue Randon, at the heart of the Casbah, is invaded and looted. The Torah scrolls are removed from the ark and torn apart, the liturgical furnishings smashed, hostile inscriptions painted on the walls; the Jewish cemetery is desecrated during those same days.
The desecration is felt by the Alger community — present since Antiquity and French since the décret Crémieux — as a sign that it will have no place in the Algeria to come. It hastens the departure that will empty the Algerian communities in less than two years, as they leave for France and for Israel.
