Water is rationed there and the summer heat makes the earthwork deadly; rest hours are dictated by shade rather than by regulation. The internees at Abadla are for the most part foreign Jews who fled Europe as refugees, joined by men transferred from other camps. The line they are building will never reach its destination, and the route will be abandoned after the war.
