The Jews of the city and towns in the district, gathered in barracks then in a barn, are shot in groups during the summer in pits dug at the forest edge; a few families hidden by peasants survive.
Mažeikiai, a town in northwestern Lithuania, is one of the first localities to be emptied after the troops' arrival. The Jews are held for several days in sheds, then shot in a nearby forest, along with those from surrounding villages brought in by cart. Local auxiliaries bear the greatest share of the operation here, with only a few men having come from outside to oversee it.
