The Muscovite armies took Vilna; the community was massacred or dispersed, and the survivors made their way to Prussia and the West.
Vilna was the capital of Lithuanian Judaism, the "Jerusalem of Lithuania," and it became so again: the community reconstituted itself and gave rise, in the following century, to the Gaon of Vilna, who made it the centre of the most rigorous Talmudic study and the heart of opposition to nascent Hasidism.
