Toll
plus d'un millier de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The community is destroyed in several waves: the men first, in July, then the women and children in late summer, all shot in woods near the city by a mobile detachment supported by auxiliaries recruited locally.

In Raseiniai, the main town of a district in Samogitia, notables and men of fighting age are arrested in the days following the entry of the troops, based on lists drawn up by local auxiliaries. Women and children are then herded into an improvised camp in the neighboring village of Žaiginys, where many die of hunger before being led to the pits. The community, one of the most notable in the province, disappears within a matter of weeks.
