The community of Vilnius was attacked during a riot. Lithuanian Judaism was then recent, summoned by the pagan and later Christian grand dukes to populate their cities and bring commerce to them.
Vilnius would become, four centuries later, the Jerusalem of Lithuania, the capital of Talmudic study and the homeland of the Gaon. Its beginnings were those of all the communities of the eastern march: a princely charter, a quarter, a commercial privilege, and the hostility of the German burghers who had settled there before them.
