Kelme, in Samogitia, was home to a Talmudic academy renowned for its rigor and its teaching of ethics. With the arrival of the occupying forces, the men are separated from their families and led to a nearby wood; the women and children follow them there a few weeks later. The academy, its masters, and its students vanish in the course of a single summer.
