With the arrival of the Germans, a pogrom broke out in Zolochiv. Jews were forced to exhume the bodies of prisoners executed by the NKVD before being massacred themselves.
The procedure — making those about to be killed dig up the corpses — recurred in several towns of eastern Galicia during the same month. It served to establish before the population an equivalence between Jews and Soviet power, an equivalence that German propaganda had been spreading for years and which here found its staged illustration.
