At Ostrog, the community was able to flee before the city was taken, but part of it was overtaken and killed.
Ostrog was one of the great centers of study in Volhynia, the seat of a renowned talmudic academy and the residence of several of the masters of the time. Its flight, and then its partial return, illustrate the fate of most of the communities in the region: they did not all disappear, but none recovered its former standing.
