A former center of study in Volhynia, Ostroh sees its community shot in several actions; its yeshiva and Hebrew printing houses disappear with it.

The city of Volhynia whose Talmudic academy had flourished during the Renaissance and where one of the great Slavic bibles was printed, Ostroh sees its community enclosed in a ghetto and then led in waves to the quarries of the surrounding area. The last inhabitants are shot during the liquidation, and the stones of the old cemetery are subsequently used in the city's construction sites.
