The town of Ladyzhyn was taken after a siege during the Khmelnytsky massacres, and the community was slaughtered along with the refugees who had gathered there.
The Cossack uprising against the Polish nobility struck the Jews of Ukraine first, as they managed for the lords the leasing of lands, mills, and taverns and were regarded as the agents of their domination. Fortified towns drew in the inhabitants of nearby townlets, and their fall each time swept away several communities at once.
