the massacred community

The community of Kremenets, in Volhynia, was massacred during the uprising.

The figures put forward by the Jewish chroniclers of the time — who sometimes speak of hundreds of communities destroyed and hundreds of thousands of dead — were long repeated as given. Recent scholarship has significantly revised them downward, without in any way diminishing the catastrophic nature of those years: a considerable portion of the Jewish community of the Republic perished or was displaced.
