The Shoah (1939–1945)

Liquidation of the Kremenets ghetto

Août 1942·Kremenets

Toll
~15 000

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The ghetto is liquidated in two weeks; its inhabitants set it on fire rather than leave.

Kremenets, in Volhynia, is dominated by the ruins of its castle and by a Jewish community attested since the Middle Ages. The closed quarter had been established there in the spring, in the lower streets of the town.

Its liquidation lasted about a fortnight at the end of summer. Rather than going out toward the pits, some inhabitants set fire to the houses of the quarter: the blaze spread and part of the old town burned, which delayed the action without changing its outcome.
