A town whose yeshiva had made it the center of Lithuanian Talmudic study, Volozhin saw its Jewish population confined, employed in forced labor, then shot in waves in the neighboring fields.
Volojyn was home to the most renowned Talmudic academy in the Russian Empire, whose teachings had spread throughout Eastern Europe. Its community is locked in and then led in waves toward the pits of the surrounding area; the house of study, emptied of its books, stands in the middle of a city without Jews.
