In Homel, the Jews of the city were ordered to convert and then killed by the Cossacks of Zolotarenko.
The choice offered between baptism and death distinguishes these massacres from those of the West: the Cossacks were Orthodox, and the uprising had a confessional dimension directed as much against the Uniate Church and Polish Catholics as against the Jews. Jewish chroniclers report that a very small number accepted conversion, and that most of them returned to Judaism as soon as the war had moved away.
