the community attacked, part taking refuge in the Radziwiłł fortress
In Nesvizh, part of the community took refuge in the fortress of the Radziwiłł, one of the most powerful families in Lithuania, of which the town was their seat.
The Jews of the Republic depended closely on these great lords, who granted them charters and monopolies over their estates. When protection held, as here, a portion of the community survived; when it gave way, as at Tulchin, all was lost. The Jewish condition in Poland-Lithuania rested entirely on this personal bond.
