The Shoah (1939–1945)
Revolt and liquidation of the Nesvizh Ghetto
21-22 juil. 1942·Nesvizh
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
Warned that the announced selection will be the last, the Jews of the ghetto refuse to leave, set fire to houses and oppose makeshift weapons to the forces investing the quarter; part reaches the forest, the rest perishes in combat or in the pits.
Nesvizh, once the residence of the Radziwiłł princes, was home to a community known for its houses of study. During the liquidation of the ghetto, its inhabitants refused to surrender: armed with a few rifles and axes, they set fire to the neighborhood and fought back against the columns sent to seize them. The resistance of Nesvizh stands as one of the first ghetto uprisings in Eastern Europe; a handful of fighters made it to the forests and joined the partisans.
