The town of Bar, in Podolia, was taken and its community annihilated during the first year of the uprising.
Podolia and Volhynia, where the Polish nobility had established its great estates and brought in Jewish settlers, were the heart of the disaster. It was there that Polish Judaism was most recent and most bound to the seigneurial system; it was there that it was most completely destroyed. The survivors fled westward, toward central Poland and the Empire.
