The community of Loutsk was attacked in Volhynia, and the survivors fled westward.

Loutsk had one of the fortified synagogues that the kings of Poland permitted to communities in the border regions, on condition that they serve in the defense of the city; the building can still be seen today. These synagogues did not stop the marauding bands, but they speak to what life was like for Jews in those frontier territories.
