The town of Uman was taken during the Khmelnytsky massacres, and the community was slaughtered together with the refugees from the surrounding small towns.
Uman would return to Jewish history on two further occasions: in the following century, during the Haidamak uprising, which wrought an even greater massacre there, and as the burial place of Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav, who settled there to die near the dead of the second slaughter and whose tomb today draws tens of thousands of pilgrims each year.
