the Jewish quarter massacred
The Jewish quarter of Uman is massacred in the month of May by the bands of Klymenko and Grigoriev.
Uman is a city of pilgrimage: it is there that Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav is buried, and the Hasidim come each year for the New Year. It had been taken by the Haidamaks in the century of the Enlightenment, massacred during the Koliivshchyna, and it is massacred again here. The Memory of the place layers these strata upon one another, and the pilgrimage takes place today on ground that bears them all.
