the town taken, the Jewish quarter looted and Jews massacred

The Haïdamaks were bands of peasants, renegade Cossacks, and deserters who roamed right-bank Ukraine, then under Polish rule. Their first major uprising seized Ouman, whose Jewish quarter was pillaged and whose inhabitants were massacred.

The mechanism was that of 1648, on a smaller scale and repeated: the Jews of the small towns were at once the visible intermediaries of the Polish nobility and the only ones with no armed protection whatsoever. They were therefore struck first, before the nobles themselves. Ouman would suffer far worse a generation later, during the Koliivshchyna.
